Overview
This policy explains what information Markbase and the Markbase browser extension handle, why that information is used, and how to contact us with privacy questions.
Markbase is operated by Ali Reza Erfan, an individual developer based in Calgary, Canada. References to “Markbase”, “we”, “us”, or “our” in this policy refer to this individual operation.
Effective date: March 11, 2026
Information We Handle
When you use Markbase or the Markbase browser extension, we handle the following categories of information:
- Account information — your name, email address, and authentication credentials used to create and access your account.
- Bookmark data — URLs, page titles, notes, tags, status values, excerpts, and selected text you explicitly save through the product.
- Product settings — preferences and configuration values needed to keep the service working as you expect.
- Extension local state — connection state, cached bookmark data, and saved-status awareness stored in browser extension storage so the extension can respond quickly without unnecessary repeated requests.
We do not collect your browsing history. The extension does not automatically record pages you visit. Information is only handled when you explicitly use the product to save, update, remove, retrieve, or search bookmarks.
How We Use This Information
We use the information described above to:
- Authenticate your account and keep it secure.
- Save, retrieve, update, and remove your bookmarks.
- Power product features including search, saved-state awareness, cache refresh, and extension setup.
- Respond to your support requests and questions.
Some features — including automatic tagging, link summarization, and AI-generated content — use third-party AI language model APIs to process bookmark content. This content is sent to AI providers solely to generate tags or summaries. It is not used to train models and is not stored by those providers beyond the scope of the individual API request.
Browser Extension Permissions
The Markbase extension uses the following browser permissions:
- storage — to store your auth token, local bookmark cache, and saved-state data in browser extension storage.
- activeTab — to read the current page‘s URL and title when you click the extension icon to save a bookmark.
- tabs — to detect open Markbase tabs for the post-install authentication handshake and serendipity engine matching.
- contextMenus — to add a “Save to Markbase” option when you right-click any link on any page.
- alarms — to schedule periodic background cache refresh and sync operations.
- scripting — to inject the serendipity engine content script that surfaces relevant saved bookmarks while you browse.
- notifications — to display the serendipity toast when a relevant saved bookmark is detected for the current page.
These permissions are used only to support the features you trigger or the local state the extension needs to function correctly. The extension does not transmit data to any server except markbase.app.
Information Sharing
Markbase uses the following third-party infrastructure providers to operate the service:
- Supabase — database hosting and authentication. supabase.com/privacy
- Vercel — application hosting and serverless functions. vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy
- Resend — transactional email delivery (weekly digest, magic link sign-in). resend.com/legal/privacy-policy
- Anthropic and OpenRouter — AI language model APIs used to generate tags, summaries, and AI-assisted features. anthropic.com/privacy · openrouter.ai/privacy
These providers process data on our behalf and are subject to their own privacy and security commitments. We do not sell personal information to any third party. We do not share your bookmark data with advertisers or data brokers.
Data Deletion
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time.
Go to Markbase → Settings → Account → Delete Account.
This permanently removes all saved bookmarks, notes, tags, and account information from our servers. Deletion is irreversible. Your data will be removed from our active systems within 30 days.
You can also email support@markbase.app to request manual account deletion if you are unable to access your account.
Security and Retention
We take reasonable steps to protect the information handled by Markbase, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all data in transit and secure infrastructure provided by our hosting partners.
No method of storage or transmission is completely secure. You should keep your account credentials private and only connect the extension to the Markbase service at markbase.app.
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your data is removed as described above. Some extension data is stored locally in browser extension storage until you disconnect the extension or clear it manually.
Your Rights and Choices
You can:
- Access and export your saved bookmarks at any time from within the product.
- Update or correct your account information in Settings.
- Delete individual bookmarks, notes, and tags at any time.
- Delete your entire account and all associated data as described above.
- Disconnect the browser extension at any time from your browser‘s extension manager.
- Opt out of the weekly digest email from Settings or via the unsubscribe link in any digest email.
If you are located in Canada, your information is handled in accordance with applicable Canadian federal and provincial privacy legislation, including PIPEDA and the Alberta Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

Policy Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will notify users via email or a notice within the product. Continued use of Markbase after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
